Now! Here's one of the main mechanics of the game, and one of the few artificialities of its presentation: While canonically Our Hero scrounges any new gear he gets from the castle, we as players are collecting gold to buy weapons and gear. Each equiped item is slowly mastered by Our Hero, giving him XP. Every time he levels up or masters a piece of gear, he gains a skill point that can be put into his stats. If you stick with gear you've already mastered, you get no XP. So that means you've got to keep switching it up, either from buying new gear or finding it in treasure chests.
Most of the gear is used by enemies in-game, so it makes sense that Our Hero would get his hands on it. but some of it is uh
